2022 The external is made of burgundy canvas and faux leather with a woven 1.5 inch-wide adjustable strap. The zipper is metal with yellow tinted thread while the pull is faux leather with a gloss printed ant detail on the underside. Two faux-leather loops on the head allow for attachments. The interior is padded and features a lining in woodland camo print. While not my first manufacturing experience, the Beetle Bag has been my most complicated. Beginning with a single complex handmade prototype, I simplified the pattern in order to make multiples out of various fabrics which I sold through my website. These handmade bags became so popular that I decided to redesign for mass-production and push my idea even further. After a factory search and an open call, I worked with two factories before achieving the final product I wanted. The khadi fabric lining was hand-dyed using Indigo in a bagru/dabu printing workshop. A spring powered mechanism opens the box when the top is pressed down. This piece was made in collaboration with Neelum Narang and her workshop in Jaipur, India. During my time in India, I noticed the way that ancient architecture interacted with the environment and how this related to craft. An ant crawling across drying fabric is a part of the making process, just as a monkey crawling on a roof is a part of the building. The idea for the Coin Purse began as more than just a play on words. I wanted to create something that used a specifically sourced piece of hardware, that being a large circular purse clasp. I also wanted to try large scale embroidery techniques. The end product can be worn or put into a tote bag, made with solid metal hardware and all-embroidered details. Inspired by the interaction of nature with design, I wanted to create something that would allow me to explore technology, craft, and material. Using Blender, I digitally sculpted the bugs and stone inlays for wax casting. I learned how to fill molds with wax and clean them up, adding an element of hand-work to a digitally designed object. I had never made a backpack before, let alone made from mesh and foam materials. These materials were introduced to me by my professor who had worked in the footwear industry for many years. Interviewing a local physical/sports therapist, I designed this backpack to combat poor posture in students. The zipper is black with a woven zipper pull. Two faux-leather loops on the head allow for attachments. The interior is padded and features a lining in woodland camo print. After selling the original beetle bags in burgundy, I decided to launch a new color in response to demand. Green was the color that I used to make the first “Bug Bag” prototype out of, so I thought the color would be fitting for larger production. By releasing through a two week pre-order, I was able to sell a larger quantity at&nbsp; 80 bags instead of 50. Each wallet is made of two parts that are machine-stitched together. The idea of dropping or losing one’s wallet among fall leaves, and the phrase “money doesn’t grow on trees”, inspired me to create the leaf wallet. I had just learned how to use the laser cutter and was excited to experiment with non-paper materials. For the Bonsai Jewelry Stand, my role was assisting the Jr. Product Designer in completing the project which had started before I came in. I redrew the tree shape several times while getting feedback during the development meetings, eventually drawing up the techpack which was sent to the factory.
