Bloom Lamp
2024

Vacuum formed plastic sheet over an ABS 3D printed mold, 3D printed lamp base. Clear PETG sheet stock is sand blasted. Various light bulbs.

This lamp was designed in Rhino and Grasshopper, with the shade being parametrically generated in a pattern similar to the Fibonacci sequence found in sunflower seeds. With this project, I wanted to balance ease of production with perceived complexity in an object. A vacuum former does this very well, picking up details in a mold object and preserving it in a smooth shell of plastic. It is also very quick at making copies, so I decided to make three lamps to start as a test for possible larger manufacture. The bases are 3D printed with a tight slot to hold the plastic connection, making assembly simple. I also tested sandblasting vacuum formed plastic to create diffusion effects similar to frosted glass.
