Zero Chair
2024

24’’ by 36’’ Half inch Birch Plywood cut on a CNC with zero waste.

Giving project constraints is one way that I like to approach design, as it can lead to outcomes that are not only exploratory but also problem-driven. For designing a chair, I thought about what factors I wanted to attempt: being reproducible, easily assembled and disassembled, comfortable, and made with minimal waste. Since I had just learned about the CNC router, I decided to push myself to create a design that had no waste whatsoever and only removed material around the half inch end mill. Every line counts, because each piece must fit into one another to make a perfect rectangle. From a single panel of plywood, these six pieces come together to create the fully functional zero chair.
